Sabine, up in the hills of Topanga has secrets to show you. I have been very afraid of horses since I got bucked off a black stallion into a barbed wire fence as a child. Sometimes I like to face my fears. When Elizabeth Canon arranged for a small group of us to go work with Sabine and her horses I was thrilled and terrified. I didn’t tell anyone about how I felt until I had to tell them. I wanted to be brave, but then I remembered telling them was the brave thing. Sabine has created an adjacent form of Equine Therapy based on many decades of personal experience. Her program is targeted on becoming a better leader, but that includes becoming a leader of your own life as well as a company. I walked in scared and I walked away absolutely IN LOVE with a horse named, Dominio! I can’t wait to go back!
Stay tuned for an essay about getting out of my comfort zones!!
2. The Float Test by Lynn Steger Strong
This book was recommended to me with so much fervor that I had to read it. It takes place in Florida. It is about siblings, aging, hopes, dreams, being known and not known. I like to know very little going into a book, so I’ll just say I totally concur with the fervor.
3. Austyn Weiner at Levy Gorvy Dayan
I saw it on the See Saw app. You should get this app. I somehow had never heard of her before. I know a lot and also I know nothing. I saw a thumbnail of a piece of art and I hoofed it up to the upper east side in the post rain humidity of NYC. I took the elevator to the fifth floor and it opened to pure magic. I was struck speechless and my heart just started melting into memory and sentimentality. It reminded me of being in Europe with my mom as a kid, but also of being exactly where I am right now as a 47 year old woman. It was waterlilies but with more experience and feeling. I couldn’t leave the room. I didn’t want to ever leave the room. I kept thinking you should leave, but I kept letting it sink into my skin.
Later when I read the artist satement it says this,
Weiner has described the installation as a representation of mourning, a celebration of life, and a pursuit of peace. A symphonic elegy of color and form, it moreover marks a point of departure for the artist and an affirmation of her abiding belief in the transformative power of art to channel and to transcend..
This was exactly it!! What a beautiful gift this work it. It is up at Levy Gorvy Dayan until July 25!!
If I had to buy one outfit this year, this might be it! It sent me back to my mom’s beautiful best friend wearing something similar in the late 80’s. I bought the blue one, left the shop in it and only wore that for five days. I am already a HUGE fan of Judi Rosen and her limited edition, sustainably sourced, made in the USA premium denim pieces. Her designs are size inclusive and super flattering. These flight suits are 5 oz Japanese Lyocell and sewn in New York.. I am absolutely jazzed on this piece of clothing!! Stop by the store on Elizabeth street!!!
5. ODDOBODY
The search is over. The number one prize has been awarded! I have spent hours talking about underwear. I have discussed and discussed the why’s, Why would they do that? Have they ever worn underwear? I sent an especially scandalous photo in a pair of Skims underpants doing so many things they should not do to my best friend from a stall at the Philadelphia Art Museum. And then I ordered ODDOBODY and now the only thing I have to say about underwear is YOU NEED THIS ONE, and ONLY THIS ONE. I was actually starstruck when I met one of the founders a couple weeks ago at Field & Supply because…
Never discuss your underwear again with Oddobody! THANK YOU! and xo!
I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw these vases at Field & Supply. I am writing this from Nantucket. I have a genetic relationship with this island, and the whaling trade. Johanna has created timeless pieces reclaiming the myths of the sea, a reclamation of the reverence of whales. Her work is stunning, delicate, original, and meticulous.
I am considering moving back home to The Hudson Valley so I can see Natalie Evans more often. I almost told her I loved her at the end of our session. Natalie was referred to me by a friend for lymphatic drainage and face sculpting, but it’s so much more! She has a private space in Rhinebeck, NY that feels soothing and exciting from the moment you walk in. She is one of the most talented massage technicians I have ever met. I felt relaxed, informed, cared for, aligned, and my face felt 40 lbs lighter! Watch this video for actual information about her work! If you live upstate you are a luck lucky duck.
8. Idle Chatter
My main man Ryan Richter got together with some of his very talented boys to make this gorgeous live album. I don’t know how to write about music, but I know when music hits me, and this hits. Buy it on Bandcamp to support musicians. Listen to it to soothe your body and mind after long days. Do what ever you want with it, but listen, it’s an absolute delight!
boys… Sam KS, Dylan Day, Garrett Lang
Kind Regards, Jenny xx
